What can a vaginal microbiome test show?
A vaginal microbiome test uses a self-collected swab to summarise vaginal microbial composition and related sequencing-derived features. The vaginal ecosystem differs from the gut: research often describes communities in which Lactobacillus is prominent, alongside other community patterns, and a less diverse community is not automatically a worse one. Reporting therefore focuses on community patterns — including Lactobacillus profile context at the genus level — rather than a single label. Depending on the selected method and package, your report may include composition summaries, diversity context and ATLAS™ interpretation layers, with longitudinal comparison when retesting is available.

Vaginal flora test, vaginal bacteria test, vaginal microbiota — what people mean
"Vaginal flora" is the older term for the vaginal microbiota — the community of microbes living in the vaginal ecosystem. A "vaginal flora test", "vaginal bacteria test" or "vaginal microbiota test" in everyday language usually means the same thing as a vaginal microbiome test: a sequencing-based profile of that community. It is different from a clinical swab culture, a targeted PCR test for named organisms, or a screening test, all of which are ordered and interpreted by a clinician.

What the sequencing method can and cannot resolve
16S rRNA V4 (515F/806R) sequencing resolves community composition to genus level. Species-level identification — including which Lactobacillus species are present — is not supported by this assay.
