What can an oral microbiome test show?
An oral microbiome test uses an at-home oral sample to summarise the oral microbiota — the bacteria and, depending on the method, other microbes that live on the teeth, gums and tongue. Depending on the selected sequencing method and report package, your OralX™ report may include composition summaries, diversity context, key microbial patterns, ATLAS™ interpretation layers and longitudinal comparison when you retest.

Mouth bacteria test, oral bacteria test — what people mean
Searches for a "mouth bacteria test" or an "oral bacteria test" generally describe the same thing: a sequencing-based profile of the oral microbial community from an oral sample. It is different from a dental examination, a plaque or gum assessment, or a targeted test for a single named organism. Research describes associations between oral microbial patterns and oral and general health; an association is not a cause, and a community profile does not diagnose a dental condition.

How the oral sample works
Collection is designed for home, with no clinic visit. The oral sample collection kit is being finalised, so its contents are not described here, and VAMS BIOME does not publish a turnaround time yet.
- Register the kit with its unique code and complete the short questionnaire.
- Provide the oral sample following the kit instructions.
- Securely return the sample for processing; laboratory arrangements are confirmed for each implementation.
- Read your report in the secure dashboard when processing is complete.
Follow the instructions in your kit exactly; they are the source of truth for timing and handling.

16S or WGS for an oral sample: which question are you asking?
Sequencing depth changes what type of microbial information can be generated from an oral sample. The methods answer different questions; they are not a ladder from basic to best.
16S Foundation™
Reads the 16S rRNA gene. A strong, cost-efficient baseline for bacterial composition and diversity, typically at genus level.
WGS Advanced™
Shotgun metagenomics reads all the DNA in the sample for broader taxonomic resolution and functional-potential context. For OralX™, research use only.
MetaT Functional™
Metatranscriptomics reads RNA for activity context at the sampled timepoint. A planned layer in the VAMS BIOME architecture; not offered for OralX™.

The oral–gut relationship, read carefully
The mouth is the entry point of the digestive tract, and research observes that some microbial groups are shared between oral and gut communities. Reading both ecosystems together — the Oral–Gut Axis bundle — describes concordance and context across two sites in one reporting structure. It does not infer that one site causes patterns in the other.

VAMS BIOME does not publish a turnaround time yet. Timing depends on the sequencing method and on laboratory processing.
Is package level the same as sequencing depth?

Can I compare oral results over time?
