Backend Platform Engineer
Build and operate the backend systems supporting VAMS BIOME’s microbiome testing and ATLAS intelligence platform — NestJS, PostgreSQL, Prisma and AWS in production, working alongside frontend, bioinformatics and scientific teams.
About this role
VAMS BIOME’s backend platform carries everything from sample registration and order flows to the delivery of ATLAS reports: REST APIs, authentication and authorization, secure data workflows, storage, and the asynchronous jobs that connect laboratory output to user-facing results.
You will work on infrastructure supporting biological and scientific data systems. The scientific algorithms themselves — ATLAS scoring and interpretation — are governed separately by the scientific team; your work is the production platform they run on: correct, secure, observable and maintainable.
The role is remote/hybrid-friendly within India, with reasonable availability for collaboration with the engineering and scientific team.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and operate NestJS / TypeScript backend services and REST APIs
- Model and evolve PostgreSQL schemas with Prisma, including reviewed, reversible migrations
- Implement authentication, authorization and secure data workflows (Supabase integrations, role-based access)
- Work with AWS services — S3/object storage, queues and worker workflows — for asynchronous processing
- Integrate third-party APIs (payments, email, laboratory systems) behind clean service boundaries
- Write meaningful automated tests and keep CI/CD green
- Add observability (logging, metrics, alerts) and troubleshoot production incidents
- Apply security and privacy fundamentals to systems that handle personal and biological data
- Collaborate with frontend, bioinformatics and scientific colleagues on end-to-end features
Requirements
- Strong experience with TypeScript/Node.js backend engineering
- Solid SQL and PostgreSQL knowledge in production systems
- Experience designing, shipping and operating production software
- A testing habit: you write tests because they catch your own bugs
- Comfortable with Git-based workflows and code review
- Working knowledge of security fundamentals (authN/authZ, secrets handling, input validation)
Preferred qualifications
- NestJS, Prisma, Supabase
- AWS (S3, IAM, queues) and Vercel deployment models
- Healthcare, life-science or other regulated-data software
- Bioinformatics platforms or scientific data pipelines
- Workflow orchestration and background-job architectures
How to apply
Around 3+ years of relevant production backend experience is typical for this role, but we read every application — demonstrated engineering depth matters more than year counts.
